Flagstaff Metropolitan Planning Organization sets course for transportation Flagstaff, AZ (October 4, 2009) – On Sunday, October 4, the Flagstaff Metropolitan Planning Organization (FMPO) released its update of the long-range regional transportation plan, Flagstaff Pathways 2030, for public comment. “This plan continues our region’s proud accomplishments in transportation,” says Matt Ryan, chairman of both the FMPO and the Coconino County Board of Supervisors. “In the last ten years we’ve added miles of trails and bike lanes, hours of transit service, and bridged across the railroad. As our region grows, we see a need for even more connections for all modes to support activity centers like downtown and Fourth Street. It’s important that we hear back from the public on these plans, so that strong policy can be created and acted upon.” David Wessel, FMPO Manager, noted several challenges the plan addresses. “Land use plans forecast growth pushing out from the city center. The plan proposes new roads and their detailed study to address congestion, basic circulation, and the potential need for emergency service access or evacuation. We’d like to hear even more from the public on the benefits these roads provide in respect to their impact on neighborhoods, open space, wildlife and other values we hold in high regard. The studies will determine our ability – or inability - to balance these needs within the potential corridors.” The formal public comment period ends on November 19, 2009. The document may be reviewed and comments may be submitted online at www.flagstaffmpo.org. Copies and drop boxes of the plan and comment forms are also located at City Hall, the County Administration offices and both branches of the library. The plan will be presented at a Town Hall Meeting October 22, 2009 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Flagstaff City Council Chambers. The FMPO anticipates taking formal action on the plan in mid-December. See their website for meeting information or contact the FMPO at 226-4849. ### [Review RTP...]
